Day Sixty-Four
We started class by seeing where sea turtle lay their eggs on the shores of Tobago. What magnificent creatures!
We took up the Tobago case study. There are 3 important things you need to come away with:
(i) Be able to show evidence to support which stage of tourism development Tobago is current in.
(ii) Provide 3 objectives for the Tobago government to provide economic develpment in the area of tourism for the next 10 years.
(iii) Make a prediction (based on your question ii) for the future of Tobago: rejuvenation, stability, or decline?
Next, we started your Matari: Building an Ecotourism Trail assignment.
Tuesday, December 6, 2011
Day Sixty-Three
(i) We started with a documentary (click here for handout) looking at Ecotourism.
(ii) You completed the questions on the handout from the Tobago case study.
Day Sixty-Two (Monday)
A bit of a tricky topic today: The Stages of Tourism Development.
See pages 95-98 in the textbook. You will be doing a case study on Tobago.
Day Sixty-One (Friday)
Today we completed worksheets on the following topics:
(i) Tourism's Effect on Communities (Positive Impacts)
(ii) Foreign Ownership (Negative Impact)
Please be able to show how the Ripple Effect (also known as the Multiplier Effect) operates. For example, if you were to consider the act of buying a locally made souvenir, how would the revenue from that sale 'ripple' through the economy of that Caribbean country? We did a few examples on the board.
... and then we ate Jamaican patties. Yum!

1) Finish watching the Lonely Planet dvd on Cuba and Haiti. Complete the purple question sheets.
2) Begin answering the Passport to the Caribbean reading and answer Part 1 of the questions. These were not assigned for homework :)

Today we worked on two set of question sheets on the topic of the Caribbean:
1) The climate of the Caribbean
2) The physical origins of the Caribbean
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
Day Fifty-Three
In small groups you traced a map of the Caribbean (using an overhead) on to a large piece of poster paper. This provided you with an opportunity to see the Caribbean in large, and get a feeling for the geographic locations of the various islands. You will be using these maps for your Design a Cruise project a few weeks from now.
Next, we did some note-taking on the geographic location of the islands, types of islands, and their cultural make-up.
Monday, November 21, 2011

We did a large mind map of the Caribbean on the front board... and discussed what you need to do at the start of tomorrow's class: find a projector, get an overhead of the Caribbean from me, cut paper from the roll, find pencils, and get rolling!

All of you work should be presented in either Powerpoint or google.docs and sent to me when finished. Please don't include your last names on the project as I will be posting them to the blog!

We started class by finishing and presenting your group mind maps of cultural Japan. I think you know more about Japan than you think!
We are going to begin this unit on Culture and Travel by studying 'Old' cultural Japan first. Many people are motivated to travel to Japan to experience the secrets of its history (ie: the lives of geisha, to watch a sumo match). Old cultural Japan is widely known for maiko/geisha culture ... so we will begin our study on this topic.
Please click here to access the handout entitled: The Secret Life of Geisha. We started to watch the short documentary to learn about the lives of geisha.
We briefly discussed how to reference your research findings. Here is the link:

Saturday, September 17, 2011
Day Nine
Today was your last class period to work on your Eurofair project.
Please remember the following for Monday:
- It will be held in the LIBRARY
- You may want to consider going to the library near the end of period 3 to set up ... though the Eurofair officially starts at 1:10 (so you will have some time at the start of class to prepare)
- DO NOT use the foods room unless you have permission from Mrs. S... and you must clean and return anything you've borrowed
- When the Eurofair is finished at approximately 1:45 ... we need to clean up the library and make it look as though we weren't there!
Click here to have a look at the Evaluation Rubric. Scroll down to the second page. Please note the emphasis in marks on your knowledge of the 5 A's.
Please be reminded ... no nuts in the food! We have people in the school with severe nut allergies, so we need to be safe!
Looking forward to Monday ... it will be a fun day!!!
Ciao!

Thursday, September 8, 2011
Day Three (already... wow!)
Click here to find out more about the Russian plane disaster we discussed in class. It's important to keep up on global events ... especially as a global traveller! And, given that we'll be jumping in to our Eurofair project shortly, it's interesting to learn about European news.
Today we took a short note (from a handout) about Travel Motivators and Travel Barriers. Click here to find the second handout ... the survey and chart.
We briefly watched the Departures show in Thailand to get us thinking about motivators and barriers. Yum... crunchy insect street food. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
Day Two!
And we are rolling!!
Today you were all given your 'golden tickets' to travel to any country in the world. I was shocked to see 0 students in South America, and only 1 wanting to go to Africa! Europe seems to be a popular place ... so start thinking about the Eurofair project that will be happening very soon! Which European country do you want to represent?
We did a brief powerpoint intro to the Travel course and identified some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. IMPORTANT: we reviewed our first important definition for 'tourist'. Do you remember what it is?
And finally, we talked money!... well, currency. You all did a great job trying to identify the 11 types of currency from around the world! Which did you think was the easiest/hardest?
Tuesday, September 6, 2011
Day One - Welcome!
