Days Fifteen & Sixteen

Memoirs of a Geisha ... continued ... and finally finished!

Please be making note of ideas concerning the culture of 'Old Japan'. There was a reflection sheet that followed.

Day Fourteen

Memoirs of a Geisha!
Click here to see the first few scenes...

Day Thirteen

Click here to watch the sumo wrestling video!

We started class by finishing and presenting your group mind maps of cultural Japan. I think you know more about Japan than you think!

We are going to begin this unit on Culture and Travel by studying 'Old' cultural Japan first. Many people are motivated to travel to Japan to experience the secrets of its history (ie: the lives of geisha, to watch a sumo match). Old cultural Japan is widely known for maiko/geisha culture ... so we will begin our study on this topic.

Please click here to access the handout entitled: The Secret Life of Geisha. We started to watch the short documentary to learn about the lives of geisha.

We briefly discussed how to reference your research findings. Here is the link:

Day Twelve

We started the class by taking up the Cultural Taboo handout. How many did you get right?

Next, we began an introduction to our second region of study: Cultural Japan. I was happy to see so many of you trying out our 'chopstick challenge'! Did you feel a bit of culture shock? Keep practicing, and you will improve ... trust me, I've been there! Click here to see an instructional youtube clip for help.

Thank you to Keethi and Ben for volunteering to try on traditional 'kimono' and 'yukata' clothing.

We started group mind maps of Cultural Japan... and we'll finish these tomorrow!

There are others in the series that we didn't get to in today's class... check them out!

Click here to access the powerpoint presentation.

If it doesn't work for you, have no fear! We can start the class tomorrow by going over the country choices. Click here to access the handout for Cultural Taboos!

Day Ten

EUROFAIR DAY IN THE LIBRARY, PERIOD 4!!!

And just to remind everyone (again) ... no nuts in the food please.

Saturday, September 17, 2011

Day Nine

Today was your last class period to work on your Eurofair project.

Please remember the following for Monday:

- It will be held in the LIBRARY

- You may want to consider going to the library near the end of period 3 to set up ... though the Eurofair officially starts at 1:10 (so you will have some time at the start of class to prepare)

- DO NOT use the foods room unless you have permission from Mrs. S... and you must clean and return anything you've borrowed

- When the Eurofair is finished at approximately 1:45 ... we need to clean up the library and make it look as though we weren't there!

Click here to have a look at the Evaluation Rubric. Scroll down to the second page. Please note the emphasis in marks on your knowledge of the 5 A's.

Please be reminded ... no nuts in the food! We have people in the school with severe nut allergies, so we need to be safe!

Looking forward to Monday ... it will be a fun day!!!

Ciao!

Day Five

Today we covered the 5 A's of Travel and Tourism: Attraction, Access, Activities, Accommodation, and Amenities. There was a note providing some context for all of these. Click here to access the Powerpoint (go to the last 6 slides...).

We watched a short video about Amsterdam and tried to apply what we saw to the 5A's and travel motivators/barriers. Click here to see a short video.

Thank you for handing in your course surveys...

Check out the pic on the sidebar of a map commonly used in Australian geography classes. Notice anything different from the one in our classroom??

Day Four

Happy weekend everyone!

On Friday you were challenged with a Europe country location quiz. Congratulations... you all exceeded my expectations!

Click here to find your first assignment. It is due at the START of class on Monday!

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Day Three (already... wow!)

Click here to find out more about the Russian plane disaster we discussed in class. It's important to keep up on global events ... especially as a global traveller! And, given that we'll be jumping in to our Eurofair project shortly, it's interesting to learn about European news.

Today we took a short note (from a handout) about Travel Motivators and Travel Barriers. Click here to find the second handout ... the survey and chart.

We briefly watched the Departures show in Thailand to get us thinking about motivators and barriers. Yum... crunchy insect street food. Don't knock it 'til you try it!

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Day Two!

And we are rolling!!

Today you were all given your 'golden tickets' to travel to any country in the world. I was shocked to see 0 students in South America, and only 1 wanting to go to Africa! Europe seems to be a popular place ... so start thinking about the Eurofair project that will be happening very soon! Which European country do you want to represent?

We did a brief powerpoint intro to the Travel course and identified some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. IMPORTANT: we reviewed our first important definition for 'tourist'. Do you remember what it is?

And finally, we talked money!... well, currency. You all did a great job trying to identify the 11 types of currency from around the world! Which did you think was the easiest/hardest?

Day One - Welcome!

Greetings and welcome to Travel and Tourism!!

I'm so excited that you've decided to 'see the big wide world' (will this help you remember the link address?) and travel the world this semester!

Start thinking about where in the world you want to travel to!

Today we reviewed the course outline and course expections. Click here to access a copy!
